What is a research design?

They say that a well-designed research project is formulated when you start working on your research design at the very beginning. A tiny little part that ‘they’ missed to mention is: HOW to do it? How are you supposed to choose your ingredients when you don’t even know their tastes? Now, my ignorant guide has just asked me to build a research design without explaining its components to me. My topic is “Impact of trust on purchasing intentions of Generations X, Y and Z.” And that’s about all I know! I would really appreciate it, if someone could clear this air of confusion for me and tell me how to make a research design.
